The site was built under a project designed to set an example on how Jewish heritage could be saved and preserved in areas where there are no, or very few, Jews left. The project’s aim was to save the Jewish cemetery in Stefanesti, the Jewish cemetery and synagogue in Harlau and the Jewish cemetery, synagogue and school in Tg. Neamt, which were derelict although they are outstanding monuments, by involving the local actors (in this case students from the History Department of the “Al. I. Cuza” University of Iasi) in the physical preservation effort.
